Abstract

This paper examines the transformative impact of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), cyber capabilities, and precision-guided weaponry, on strategic deterrence in South Asia, with a focus on Pakistan’s evolving security dynamics. As traditional deterrence models struggle to address the complexities of modern conflict, these technologies offer both opportunities and challenges for maintaining regional stability. The study highlights how Pakistan leverages asymmetric capabilities, such as cyber and electronic warfare, and collaborative defense technology projects with allies like China to counterbalance India’s conventional and technological superiority. However, it also identifies significant challenges, including economic constraints, dependence on external partnerships, and risks associated with technological proliferation, such as destabilization through an AI arms race. The findings emphasize that while Pakistan has made notable strides in integrating advanced technologies into its defense framework, sustaining and expanding these efforts require careful prioritization of resources, strategic collaborations, and a focus on indigenous innovation. The paper concludes that Pakistan must adopt a balanced approach to technology-driven deterrence by addressing vulnerabilities, ensuring economic sustainability, and fostering alliances to enhance its strategic autonomy and credibility in an increasingly volatile regional security environment.
